The weekend of 8 May 10, I took a trip down to southern Utah to check out the Dark Canyon

Wilderness.  I drove up into the mountains above Natural Bridges, and decided to just enjoy a

lazy weekend walking around the deserted forest service roads.  I didn't see anyone the entire

weekend, and I just spent lots of times wandering around the dirt roads.  I really had a good

time, because sometimes walking the roads can be more relaxing than hiking the trails.  The

woods up there are nice, and there are more deserted forest service roads than we get in the

mountains of northern Utah.  I camped by a small pond on Saturday night, then I did more

walking on Sunday morning.  I did acquire a dog on my walking on Saturday night.  It had a

tracking collar on, but it stayed with me the rest of the day on Saturday, slept at my campsite,

and then stayed with me on Sunday morning.  I finally called the number on the dog's collar,

and found that a guy in Blanding had let a few of them go out, and he was coming back on

Sunday to try to find them.  After leaving on Sunday morning, I headed down to Cedar Mesa

and did a little bit of hiking near Road Canyon.  I've decided that I'm not a big fan of the Cedar

Mesa canyons.  There just very dry and dusty and hot, and I just don't like them that much.  So

after leaving Cedar Mesa, I headed down into Blanding, where I would be spending the next

few days in a Technical Canyoneering class.

On Sunday night I stayed in a hotel, and on Monday I began my canyoneering class with North

Wash Outfitters.  The class was really good, and I learned a lot.  On Monday we mostly did

classroom-type stuff at a city park in Blanding.  On Monday night I camped at Recapture

Reservoir just outside of town.  On Tuesday we drove down to Bluff, and did some rappelling

practice on some boulders.  I stayed in a hotel on Tuesday night, and on Wednesday we did

some technical canyoneering outside of Bluff.  The class was great, and I highly recommend it

to anyone interested in learning how to get into the more technical canyons in southern Utah.
