On 21 April 12, Tracy and I headed out to the West Desert on the west side of the Great Salt

Lake.  For some reason we had never driven the roads on that side of the lake, and there was

going to be a meteor shower that night, so I figured we would camp out there and do some

good stargazing.  We made a brief stop at the Bonneville Salt Flats, continued on to Wendover

and then headed north.  The drive up wasn't all that exciting.  The desert out that way is just

the old sea bed, and there aren't a lot of interesting features.  We ended up finding a great

camp spot on a dry lake bed, though.  We didn't see a soul out here at all, and it was

wonderfully remote.  The lake bed was very dusty, and it made all of our gear very dusty.  We

walked a bit and then set up the telescope and prepared for the night.  Unfortunately, the

meteor shower was a dud.  Conditions were perfect...it was clear and dark and moonless and

not terribly cold.  It was a little windy, but I just used the truck as a wind block.  But we only saw

a half dozen or so faint meteors...which would be a fairly average number for any night without

a shower.  We did get great viewing with the telescope, though, of Venus, Mars, and Saturn.

There weren't a lot of other interesting deep sky objects up, though.  I was able to manually

find a couple of good open clusters, so it's nice to know that I'm getting better with the

telescope and star-finding.

This was a really nice place for stargazing.  Coming from the north, it's only a couple of hours

away.  There's a little light from Salt Lake City or Ogden to the south east (even though SLC is

about 80 miles away in a straight line), but it wasn't too bad, and it was completely dark in all

other directions.  There were some low mountains to the west, but they were pretty far away,

so they didn't block much of the sky.  Even though the shower was a dud, it was a still a good

night out.
